M E R M A I D S !
I had a Splat day last week with Sue being away and took a break to adorn my sketchbook with some funky colours! I quite like the one above, and gave her opaque fins and suckers down the front of her tail to contrast with her rainbow hair and black eyes. She’s probably the most tropical one that’s jumped out of my head so far ^.^

A Selkie! She’s plainer, chunkier and much less colourful than the Mermaids but is more good-natured, practical and modest.

An Orca Mermaid! I had Killer Whales and polar icebergs on the brain when I started her.

This one got scarier as I started colouring her in.
She’s a Plague Mermaid – lives in the Dark and see’s nothing but the Future and can’t speak to tell it.
When I eventually (Ha-haaa!) finish the Romance Story I’ve been working on for three years, I’d like to illustrate each new Chapter with a full-page plate before the Story resumes.

I treated myself to an Elissabat a few weeks ago and only got the chance to unbox her properly last night. She is bloody gorgeous! It’s lovely that Monster High have released Dolls already in their ambitions rather than not quite getting there yet, plus I’ve been waiting a while for a Gothic-Lolita styled one 😉 If they release a Monster High Wrestler Doll, I’ll be over the Moon 😀

Shelf is getting a bit full again…no? 😉

Put together Twylla’s outdoor run this morning and had her out for a few hours in the Sun this afternoon whilst I drew for a few hours. Gonna take some tunes out next time and maybe have a spare Bunny-sitter so I don’t need to pack up everytime I need the loo – haha!

She doesn’t look impressed, Bless her!
Phew – That’s all for now!

Unboxing Ceremonies

The Girl’s have been having a fight for space with my avidly-growing book collection for a while now, and choosing between the two wasn’t even worth considering, so the time came for them to upgrade to their own black-shelf corner space in the Living Room.
Poor Lagoona has been in her box since before Christmas, but I wanted to get the Living Room properly finished and ready before I introduced her to the rest of the Girls 😉
I tidied away the Wallpapering table, cleaned out Twylla, gave the room a thorough clean and bought a bottle of wine for the occassion:

“I guess you’re my new sister!”
She doesn’t come with a stand, so popping her next to lonely eBay-liberated Rochelle was quite lovely. Poor Rochelle! She was sitting there all on her own still waiting for her Deuce! Hopefully Lagoona will give her a cuddle, share her hot chocolate and tell her that what will be, will be, Love!
I adore her, right down to the tentacley beverage and her slippers! She’s kicking her legs in an elegantly careless and casual fashion and it just makes me go *squee* everytime I glance over at the corner.
The pink locker behind everyone was a present from my own Sister, and holds everyone’s hairbrushes and Diaries.

Does anyone else have Unboxing Rituals – detailed or casual – when they bring a new Girl home or am I just weird?

Haha 😉

Don’t ya wanna be a Monster too?

Has it really been *THAT* long since my last Monster High post??It’s been nearly six months!

Needless to say, my Collection has grown since I first brought Frankie home, stood her on my Bookcase and marvelled at the way her bones lit up when her abdomen was pressed. Rochelle arrived not long afterwards to keep her company and Abbey soon joined the ten-inch space they lived in between my Jacqueline Wilson Collection and my Guru Guru Pon-Chan Manga. It got a bit cramped until Venus McFlytrap arrived back from a camping holiday in Whitby & Twyla came home from the 13 Wishes feature movie on the anniversary of a personal heartbreak back in August that the girls suddenly needed their own shelf.

There’s also nothing quite like picking up a new Doll to lift a Smile 🙂

I think a lot about abstract, daft things and I started thinking that whilst each character in the MH series has an endearing trait, they display an equally opposing force to compromise it at the same time. Traits present in both genders across the world, even though the series has a female majority. These are the ones I could think of off the top of my head:

FRANKIE STEIN: ‘Electrifying’ (Sexually appealing) yet she’s unstable – regularly losing limbs and ‘falling to pieces’. Frankie is probably my favourite character from the whole series. I’ve always dug Hetero-chromatic eyes and my Eng Lit GCSE coursework for creative writing (all 26 sides of it) featured at least one character with unusual eye colours. Being a Printer, I can fully appreciate the God Complex which is the balance of creating either a flaw or something beautiful, even though it is essentially the same thing, and Frankie was created from many parts from many bodies but is still quite attractive.

CLAWDEEN WOLF: Sexual Confidence & Attractiveness hindered by Menstruation – “That time of the month”.

DRACULAURA: Compromisation of Traditional Heritage (Dressing modern, going out in the Sun covered in Sun cream, keeping daylight hours, becoming Vegan, Dating the enemy – a Werewolf) yet she still has no reflection and a few traditional

CLEO DE NILE: “Queen-Bee Syndrome” – The demand for (inherited) Respect, yet the absolute absence of Independence. Incapable of Autonomy.

LAGOONA BLUE: The In-Law Syndrome. Universally accepting and friends with all Monsters yet is judged by Gil’s parents for being a Saltwater.

GHOULIA YELPS: Fast and gifted in the Mind, yet painfully slow in the Body.

SPECTRA VONDERGEIST: The need to be recognized even though she is invisible. Opposes Twyla, who is comfortable in her own skin and actually quite chilled out!

ABBEY BOMINABLE: Frosty. Headstrong. Sexually rejective and immune to charms yet craves traditional Courtship.

VENUS MCFLYTRAP: The responsibility to care for and nurture – in her case, the environment. Environmentally dependent – needs Sunlight & water and being out of the dark.

At watching the 13 Wishes movie, I’m quite over the moon that the company that produced Barbie also managed to create something that encourages individuality. I hope the school-aged Barbies have stopped exercising their superiority complex over any self-confessed Monster even ten years after leaving School.

Monster High: The Bug finally Bites

Like many other young, single, workaholic females in their mid-Twenties (I hope!),  I found myself discovering the Monster High Franchise years after everyone else did.  I watched a few  2-3 minute Webisodes every evening after discovering one of the Dolls online and found myself falling in Love with the characters and their stories, which was quite alien for me as it’s such a mainstream franchise.

I had seen and read various Fanfic Followings from the hardcore new My Little Pony, Harry Potter & Dr Who  fanatics – never *really* understanding them – but I tend to collect niche and specific entertainment lines – Living Dead Doll Mini’s, Junko Mizuno Graphic Novels, Transmetropolitan Comics, The Guru-Guru Pon-Chan Manga, Unconventional Disney Princesses & the Barbie Line (ie Mulan, Esmerelda , Barbie and Tanner – The Dog that poops! – and Pregnant Midge

As a former teenage Goth and someone who’s had to pick up the pieces and stitch them back together several times, I identified particularly with the Protagonist – Frankie Stein. I think she’s adorable! As a professional crafter, I think there’s also a certain beauty in making something by yourself thats just the way you imagined it. There’s also a beauty in repairing certain ‘flaws’ that your magnified God Complex gives you. Frankie is a naive adolescent, who is still figuring out the world, losing and repairing herself as life shows her lessons and she copes just fine.

After a long and miserable day last week, I went to ASDA in search of wine & cheesecake, and saw that they were offering the Ghoul’s Alive! Frankie Doll, as well as Spectra & Clawdeen, and I just had to bring home my first Monster High Doll. I paid nearly £23 for her (worth every penny), which in Single Life works out at:

* Five or Six bottles of Good wine OR
* A week’s worth of Groceries OR
* Maximum willing spend of two pairs of good Combat Pants OR
* Three to four nice Graphic T-shirts.

She’s beautiful. She comes dressed in her main outfit- white shirt with black net short sleeves, green/blue tartan skirt, stitches in the main places, a lightening bolt studded belt, black and white heels, and long black & white hair.
She also does this when you press the button on her abdomen:

She was sat in her box for a week until I was ready to tidy the Flat and de-Box her for display next to my Jacqueline Wilson books today. I brushed her hair which was kinked from the packaging and can’t wait until the light is right for some proper pictures!

Rochelle won my heart as a young woman made of stone, but still very interested in knowledge and fiercely defending her loved ones.

After accidently bumping into her, Deuce found that she was immune to his gaze which usually turned people temporarily to stone, and initially rejected her romantic interest as he is devotedly dating the demanding and undeserving Cleo De Nile. I feel that there is a future for this pair and I sincerely hope that they both pursue it.

Rochelle falls in love with Deuce’s beautiful, green eyes when his sunglasses fall during their encounter and I think there is something very romantic about her  refusal to give up on him – as well as her attempts to lure him to her just to talk to him – which I’m sure all young women can relate to the desire at one point in their lives. I have purchased a Rochelle and am eagerly awaiting her arrival to keep Frankie company.

Perhaps when my own current Deuce  presents himself to me, I shall finally give her her long-awaited companion 🙂
